IPhone Applications

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Since the inception of the IPhone, everyone has been talking about the exciting and cool applications that developers can create for it. There are talks of location based applications. For example, suppose you were searching for food, then Google can send ads from restaurants near where you are. At first I thought this is a great idea, but after some consideration, I realized that this will just mean more spam, and I hate spam. I already hate the occasional text messages I get from T-mobile about some random promotion they have.

Then there is also this social networking aspect using the mobile device. How lazy are we that we are not willing to just call our friends to find out what they are doing? I suppose that these types of applications will be similar to twitter, but I still don’t know what the heck twitter is all about.

Now this is an application I want. I want to be able to store receipts on my IPhone. I always keep my credit card receipts, but it has become a ritual that after 3 months, I just dump my receipts into a trash bin. It would be even nicer to be able to synchronize my IPhone with GNUCash or Quickens so that at the end of each month I know where my money went. Maybe I am drinking too much beer, and should cut down on beer consumption if I want to have enough money for my trip to Spain.

On a second thought that will be great. If I can put into Quicken that I need this much money by x time period, and then Quicken can analyze my spending history to tell me what I need to cut back on to have this much money. Come on all you super geniuses out there, make something like this. Hopefully, this will be open source and so I can use it for free :-) .

This was definitely a very entertaining movie. I thought I wouldn’t like it because it seems that the movies were meant for children. However, the movie had many “funnies” and it was just a lot of fun. I am not good at describing or explaining why I like the movie, but I have to say that it is definitely worth spending the 9 dollars (stupid movie theaters and ticket price) to watch.

It is also possible that I enjoy the movie because I am still just a kid inside :-) .

Chicken and waffles

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

I had chicken and waffles today at the Screen Door in northeast Portland today. The restaurant is pretty cool with a wide variety of brunch items. They serve Stumptown coffee which I really like. If you want to go there, prepare to wait between 20 to 30 minutes as there are many people going there for brunch on the weekends.

The waffles were made with a sweet potato flour. This is very similar to the traditional flour waffles. However, I found the taste to be better. Maybe it is the whole novelty aspect. Unfortunately I was a little disappointed by the chicken. The chicken were skinless, boneless chicken breast. When I think about fried chicken, I think of fried chicken drumstick and thigh, with bones and skin. I am not sure why, but ripping the meat from the bones just makes it tastier. And of course, no one can deny that one of the best part of fried chicken is the skin. I am not saying that the food was not good, but I was just disappointed at the type of fried chicken that they served.

Screen Door is good and they serve large portions for a reasonable price. However, for chicken and waffles, they still can’t beat Roscoe’s chicken and waffle.
