scotland here I come

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

Tomorrow I am going to be on my flight to Scotland. I hope this will be a fun trip fill with food, drink, and other things that are new to me. I have never been to Scotland, but unfortunately, I am only going to be there for a short time period, and I will not have a chance to catch the loch ness monster.

On the bright side, my friend is going to take me to eat some traditional Scottish breakfast and dinner. I think one of the things I want to try is Haggis, which is basically stuff cooked inside a sheep stomach. This will not go well with my plan of eating healthier, but I will only go to Scotland probably once my entire life.

I will try to post some pictures here when I get chance.

Blue marlin

Monday, December 17th, 2007

I don’t really know what type of fish marlins are exactly, but they sure taste pretty good, and from what I can understand it is pretty healthy also.

Ingredient:

4 oz of marlin

1 tomato, 0.5 onion, minced garlic, lemon, and mushroom

Preheat your oven to 350 degree.
In a pan, heat up a teaspoon of oil. Add in onion, tomato, garlic, and mushroom. Cook everything for a couple of minutes.

Now sprinkle some salt and pepper. Let this cooked for a little while.

Put the marlin on top of the veggie stuff, and sprinkle a generous amount of pepper. Let it bake for 8 minutes. Turn the marlin over, and sprinkle more peppers. Let it bake for another 8 minutes.
Done.

Support for food stamp

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

I read an interesting blog post on the New York times recently, and the more I think about the content of the post, the more I think we should support food stamp (well actually food stamp for fruits and vegetables).

I knew that junk food was cheaper than healthy food, but I didn’t think it would differ by as much as an order of magnitude. “Energy-dense munchies cost on average $1.76 per 1,000 kcal, compared with $18.16 per 1,000 kcal for low-energy but nutritious foods.” So if you are in need of money, then you will gravitate toward the junk foods so you can still get the energy needed. In the short run, this works out fine. However, the more junk food you consumed, the worst your health gets. In the blog, it was pointed out that “the findings … may help explain why the highest rates of obesity are seen among people in lower-income groups”.

Now if we look at the cost difference between health care and food, it is obvious that health care is much more expensive than food. So doesn’t it make sense to supply the people who are less fortunate food stamps so that they can enjoy a healthy meal?

I personally am guilty of spending less money for the junk foods. I like them too much, but I think I should change.

Generation Y not

Guff slowly opened his lazy eyes. He didn’t like the sun, but unfortunately for him, the world which he lived in operates under the sun. This world definitely enjoys light; their motto is “Let there be Light!”. As his brain forces his eyelids to open, Guff was in for a real shocker. His room was dark, there was not a single beam of light. “What is going on? What time is it?”

Rolling to the side of his bed, Guff looked at his clock. “8:45 AM!!

Guff rolled toward the other side of his bed, and pulled his blanket over himself hoping to catch another good 4 hours of sleep. There was a loud knock on his door. Someone was shouting, “Get up. It is time for class.” Guff realized that today he actually had a class at 9 AM. Guff quickly rolled out of his bed. Luckily for him, he was already dressed since earlier in the morning he had gone to bed with his clothes on after many glorious games of spear toss. He quickly put on his shoes and ran to the bathroom to do the morning stuff.

At 8:57AM, Guff was ready to go! He went to his friend’s room and together they went to class. As they walked into class, the professor was talking about a certain group of people. Guff didn’t realize it at the time, but she was describing him. Guff’s life will forever be a horizontal line, with a little jitter here and there, but never experience any large changes; he will not even obtain local minimum or maximum because these two do not exist in a flat line. Guff will never not experience poverty (unless we all decide to use typewriters again), nor will he ever experience major success (Guff is too scare to try because he doesn’t know what failure will be like).

80 minutes later, class was over. Guff walked with his friend back to their dwelling place. As Guff walked, one of his good friends, Ma Ca, approached him. (There are many stories about Ma Ca, and they will come later). The two started to talk about recursions and etc., and not even realizing it, Guff had ignore his other friend. Guff didn’t even realize it when his other friend left. Is recursions is really that interesting: f(x) = f(x+1) + 1???
